Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the United Kingdom and because it is initially asymptomatic, can go undetected for several years. It usually affects both eyes, to varying degrees and occurs when eye fluid is unable to drain properly, causing a build-up of intra-ocular pressure. This can lead to damage to the optic nerve and light sensitive tissue which lines the back of the eye.
Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, laser treatment or surgery, which controls the condition and minimizes future damage. Early diagnosis is essential to avoid irreversible visual impairment and you are entitled to a free NHS test if you are:
- Over 40 years and have a first-degree relative (parent or sibling) with glaucoma.
- You may also be entitled to a free NHS test if an ophthalmologist thinks you are at risk of developing glaucoma
Lambrou Eye Studio provides patients with a dilated pupil eye examination and tests, using sophisticated instruments, to diagnose this condition. These are virtually painless and include, where appropriate:
- Applanation tonometer
- Pupil dilation
- Visual Field testing
- Visual acuity
- Biomicroscopy and fundal examinations
Regular eye examinations are essential to allow the early detection and stablisation of glaucoma.
