A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens, caused by a build up of protein, which can occur in one or both eyes. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens and causes some loss of vision. There are different types including:
- Age related cataracts
- Congenital cataracts
- Secondary cataracts
- Traumatic cataracts
Certain conditions, such as diabetes, medication and other factors may cause cataracts to develop and other risk factors include exposure to cigarette smoke, steroids and heavy alcohol consumption.
Cataracts develop slowly and cause few symptoms until they actually preclude light and cause:
- Blurred vision
- A change in colour perception, because the discoloured lens acts as a filter
- Progressive short sightedness
- Problems associated with glare from headlights when driving at night
- Diplopia (double vision)
- Sudden changes in glasses prescription
If you have any problems with your vision or notice any changes, make an appointment with Lambrou Eye Studio and we will carry out an eye test (remember to bring your glasses or wear your contact lenses). We use a slit lamp to examine the eyes. If this indicates the presence of a cataract, we may refer you to an Ophthalmologist or an Ophthalmic Surgeon, who can confirm the diagnosis and plan appropriate treatment if necessary. It is possible, during the early stages of a cataract, to correct your vision with a change in prescription, bifocals or contact lens, which eliminates the need for surgery until a later stage.
Cataract surgery is a routine procedure, carried out on an outpatient basis. It involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear, artificial one and it is very successful in restoring vision.
Lambrou Eye Studio recommends you have an eye test every 2 years, or more frequently if you fall within a high -risk group.
If Lambrou Eye Studio, Locksbottom, can be of any help or assistance with any of your visual requirements or needs, please do not hesitate to call on or visit the contact page and we will respond within 24 hours.
